Digital Display Applications at the New Archaeological Museum of Chania – Chania Ephorate of Antiquities

SPECTRAtech S.A., in collaboration with the Chania Ephorate of Antiquities, successfully implemented the project “Digital Display Applications at the New Archaeological Museum of Chania.” The project focused on the development and deployment of a series of digital technologies aimed at enhancing the museum’s collections, improving the visitor experience, and increasing its accessibility and engagement. These applications complement the museum’s permanent exhibition, enriching its content and making it more accessible, interactive, and appealing to a wider audience.

The Archaeological Museum of Chania is one of the most significant museums in Crete, hosting collections that span a wide chronological range, from the prehistoric era to late antiquity. The museum’s collections include valuable artifacts such as terracotta vessels, coins, jewelry, sculptures, inscriptions, columns, and mosaics, originating from Chania and the surrounding region. To highlight this rich cultural heritage, the project incorporated digital initiatives utilizing modern technologies, creating a unique and immersive visitor experience.

The primary objective of the project was to showcase and present the museum’s collections through digital media while respecting the historical and aesthetic characteristics of the space. Additionally, innovative technologies were employed to provide information to visitors and enhance interactivity, transforming the museum visit into a comprehensive experiential journey. Special attention was also given to accessibility, allowing a broader audience to explore and engage with the collections, regardless of physical or geographical constraints.

The project deliverables initially included documentation of the materials and the creation of texts used in the applications, which were translated into three languages to broaden accessibility. Three-dimensional visualizations of ten selected artifacts were created, enabling visitors to explore the objects in detail through interactive displays. Furthermore, a digital, web-based, and interactive map was developed to show the exact locations of specific artifacts, providing a deeper understanding of their historical context.

A particularly important feature was the development of an interactive digital application to enrich the visitor experience. Additionally, two educational tablet applications were created to engage and educate the public, particularly children. A digital tour application for iOS and Android mobile devices was also designed and implemented, allowing visitors to explore the museum in a personalized and immersive way.

Another innovative element of the project was the introduction of digital signage throughout the museum, providing dynamic, real-time information, as well as a virtual reality (VR) application that enables users to digitally navigate the museum space even if they are not physically present. To support all these applications, the necessary technological equipment was procured, ensuring smooth and seamless operation.

Finally, the project included training for museum staff in the use of the new applications, ensuring effective management, while pilot testing allowed for evaluation and improvements prior to full implementation.

The project’s significance is multifaceted: it not only enhances the presentation and display of the exhibits at the New Archaeological Museum of Chania but also strengthens the broader cultural and tourism potential of the region. The innovative digital applications make the museum visit more engaging, increase public interest, and encourage interaction with the museum space. Moreover, the integration of modern technologies enhances the museum’s educational value, attracting new visitor groups and promoting the dissemination of knowledge about the ancient history of Chania.
